Meal Plan
What if the dining hall is busy?
We encourage all students to explore their options and make the most of their meal plans. We find that lines are typical during class breaks and peak dining hours, during the first few weeks of classes; as students are learning to navigate campus, and extracurricular activities, including labs.
- We have three traditional dining halls, explore them all; each offers a unique menu every day, with different hours.
- Try dining at off-peak times (if possible, visit before or after class breaks, consider an early or later evening meal).
- Take a meal to-go from the dining hall with EcoWare.
- Utilize your Retail Points to dine at one of our retail locations located on campus; these locations offer a variety of options, including grab-and-go.
- Take advantage of our Meal Exchange Program.
How can I get the most out of my meal plan?
- Visit all three traditional dining halls, students have access to all of them, and each serves a different menu at each station daily.
- Use your Retail Points that come with your meal plan; they offer additional flexibility and variety.
- Take advantage of the Meal Exchange Program; visit Dining Updatesto learn more about the program.
- Download the Everyday app from your favorite app store to view menus and place orders to-go.
- Take advantage of our EcoWare, reusable take-out container program; visit to learn more.
- Follow us on social media @UVMdining or check out our digital screens to learn about our themed events, food fests, pop-ups, and more!
Can I switch my meal plan and how long does it take?
Yes! You can switch your meal plan within the first 2 weeks of each semester. Visit our Dining Plan Options page to view what options are available and their associated cost. Once you know the meal plan you want to change to, you must complete a Meal Plan Switch Form in the Residence Life Housing Portal.
It may take up to 10-business days to process a meal plan switch, which are completed in the order they are received. Once your order is submitted, please begin to use your plan as if it were your new one. You can only switch your meal plan via this ResLife form once. Please make note of your current meal plan in the Housing Portal and be sure you know which meal plan you wish to switch to before completing the form.
Unless you indicate a change to us, the Resident Meal Plan you are on at the end of the fall semester will automatically renew for the spring semester and billed accordingly. Feel free to E-mail mpo@uvm.edu or call our Meal Plan Office at (802) 656-2945.
Can I make additions to my meal plan?
Yes, on or off-campus students may add Retail Points to your account via our Shop page . These points will be added to a separate plan. If you have questions, please email us MPO@uvm.edu. Retail Points purchased Monday - Friday before 4:00 PM will be added the same day. For any orders after 4:00 PM, they will be added the next business day.
I added Retail Points to my account, how do I use them?
Retail Points that come with your meal plan expire at the end of the academic year; our system will automatically deduct those points first. Visit the Webcenter to check your Retail Point balance. Once you use up all the original Retail Points that come with your meal plan, the system will automatically pick from the next available plan.
I live off-campus. What dining options do you have?
Many off-campus students eat one or more of their meals on-campus each day. When eating at our Retail locations, our Off Campus/ Commuter Meal Plan will save you time and money.
- View all Dining Plan Options, here.
- Looking to purchase an Off-Campus/Commuter Meal Plan? Meal plans can be purchased online.
- If you have questions, please email us MPO@uvm.edu.
How do I find out my account balance?
There are several ways to view your account balance:
- Check your account balance online by registering with CATCard's Office Webcenter.
- Ask a cashier at one of our retail locations
- View your balance under Payment Methods in the Everyday app or on the browser
Do Retail Points expire?
Any unused Retail Points that came with your on-campus student meal plan as part of the housing and meal contract will carry over from the fall semester to the spring semester. However, they do not carry over at the end of the academic year and are non-transferable and non-refundable. Any additional Retail Points added to your on-campus student meal plan are yours until the balance is used.
How does the Meal Exchange work?

Sustainability
What is EcoWare and how do I use it?
EcoWare, our reusable takeout container program, helps minimize the use of single-use containers and increases the flexibility of meal plans by allowing meals to-go from our dining halls. Starting in Fall 2024, UVM Dining implemented ReusePass, a web-based app and technology to expand the program. Learn more about how the program works on our Sustainability page.
Can I bring my own Tupperware/reusable container to get food from the dining hall?
No. The only way you can take a meal out of the dining hall is by using the EcoWare program. Due to health and safety requirements, the UVM Dining staff is required to clean and sanitize all reusable containers.
Do I have to swipe twice to get an EcoWare container in the dining halls?
You will only swipe once if you take an EcoWare meal to-go. This is used for tracking purposes and will deduct a meal from your account. If you'd also like to dine-in, please inform the cashier, and they will have you swipe again for that meal (a total of two swipes).
Where do I return my EcoWare container?
Return your used EcoWare container to any ReusePass Return Bin (located in all locations that offer EcoWare) within 3 days of checking it out. Please note that is can take up to 24 hours for the check-in to be processed in the Reusepass App.
Can I use refillable mugs on-campus?
We welcome refillable mugs up to 24 ounces in our retail locations (not dining halls). Save 25 cents off the price of a large coffee when you use your mug!
How does UVM Dining incorporate local food on campus?
- UVM Dining has a long history of partnering with local farmers, producers, and distributors to help build and maintain a strong local and regional food system. Local food not only tastes great; it helps support the local economy, and the working lands of Vermont and reduces the miles that food travels before it gets to our plate.
- We partner with Black River Produce and The Intervale Food Hub, who provide local, regional, and sustainable produce, dairy, meat, and specialty foods to campus. We are also proud to support UVM's agricultural programs, including the Catamount Education Farm, and Proctor Maple Research Center.
- UVM Dining is a proud member and recognized Gold Barn Honoree of the Vermont Fresh Network (VFN). To qualify as a Gold Barn honoree, we must achieve impressive localvore standards, including sourcing ingredients from 15-individual farm partners (10 of who are VFN farms). Additionally, 35% or over $350,000 of food purchases must be made from Vermont producers or locally grown/raised food products. We purchase products from about 40-VFN member farms through our local food distributors. We are also a key sponsor and participant in the Vermont Fresh Network Annual Forum.
- Vermont Farm to Plate is the statewide initiative legislatively directed to increase economic development and jobs in Vermont’s farm and food sector and improve access to healthy local food for all Vermonters. A ten-year plan to strengthen the working landscape, build the resilience of farms and food enterprises, improve environmental quality, and increase healthy, local food access for all Vermonters is being implemented by over 350 farm and food sector organizations from across the state.
- UVM Dining commits to supporting the production and purchase of local food across Vermont to accomplish Farm to Plate goals: to increase the amount of Vermont food products consumed by Vermonters, local food production, and the amount of locally produced food available in Vermont institutions.
Food Waste. What does UVM Dining do with leftovers?
Did you know 40% of food produced in the United States does not get eaten?
Growing, transporting, and preparing food takes an incredible amount of energy, water, and natural resources only to go uneaten and end up in the compost, or even worse, the landfill.
** **
Our team is doing what we can to feed people, not the compost. We ask that you join us on this mission!
Here are a few strategies to consider:
- At self-service stations: Do a "hunger-level check". Some days you might be hungrier than others; check in with your body to serve yourself a portion to support your body at that given time. Remember, you can always come back for seconds!
- At served stations: Ask to customize your dish; want to skip a component of the meal or have a double portion of something? Just ask the cook or server, and they can create a dish just for you.
- Know you'll end up with leftovers on your plate? Get an EcoWare container from the cashier to take home and eat at another time.
