Campus Kitchens Project

Campus Kitchen Project LogoThe Campus Kitchens Project is a national community service organization that works with students to share on-campus kitchen space, to recover food from cafeterias, and engage students as volunteers who prepare and deliver meals to the community. The program is funded in-part by the Sodexo Foundation

In January 2009, UVM students started a local chapter of the national Campus Kitchens Project. The Campus Kitchens Project at UVM uses donated food from our dining halls along with local restaurants and stores to serve meals at Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf weekly. Some of the food is even grown on-campus in the gardens outside of Jeffords Building. Student volunteers in the Campus Kitchens club plan menus, coordinate food pickup, and prepare and deliver the meals. All of these meals are prepared using the University Marche's kitchen. Students also teach nutrition classes at local nonprofit organizations.


Stop Hunger

Stop Hunger LogoOver 16 million children in the United States are at risk of hunger. We're committed to fighting hunger and malnutrition by engaging the entire community including employees, customers, clients and suppliers. We regularly donate food to the Vermont Food Bank and Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf as well as, support student fundraising efforts for COTS and the Annual Hunger Banquet. Join us and together we can end childhood hunger. 

Servathon Month

Stop HungerApril is servathon month, an entire month devoted to fighting hunger. We work to create awareness for the plight of hungry, while providing an enriching team-building experience for our employees. Activities have included fundraisers, canned food drives, donations of surplus food, time spent cleaning food banks, and providing free training on food safety for food banks and homeless shelters.  

Our most successful event has historically been our Caring Cans food drive. Collection boxes are placed within each of our units for students and employees alike to donated canned and non-perishable food, which then is in turn donated to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf

Hero's of Everyday Life

In 2005, Alice Sutton, the Supervisor of Alice’s Café, was one of eight recipients of the Hero's of Everyday Life award. Alice was presented with her award at a banquet in Washington, D.C. on June 6, 2005. This award recognizes employees who invest their time, talent and service spirit to help some of the 36 million Americans who are at risk of hunger. The Foundation donated $5,000 to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf in Alice ’s honor.

Since 1980, Sutton has been collecting canned food from donors at the University of Vermont by simply placing cardboard collection boxes around campus with a sign explaining that the items are destined for the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf in Burlington . Alice ’s simple but effective strategy to fight hunger in her area has resulted in the collection of over 42,000 pounds of canned and non-perishable food over the years for the Food Shelf.
